The Fairly Odd Parents is an American cartoon show that is produced by Nickelodeon. It was created by Butch Hartman, the first episodes ran in September 2001.

The show is about a young boy named Timmy Turner who is played by Cara Strong. Timmy hopes for a perfect life, but in reality his life is far from that. His parents are constantly working so he is left in the care of his evil babysitter named Vicky.  As Timmy says, “that’s Ichy with a V”!

Timmy’s constant companions are a pair of fairy godparents (the fairly odd parents) name Cosmo and Wanda. The fairy godparents are controlled by a large book of rules called “Da Rules”. These rules tell the fairy’s what the children can wish for and what they can’t; it also lays out how the fairly godparents have to act too.

The main plot line of the show is Timmy using wishes to try and solve his problems and the mayhem that usually results from making the wishes. Timmy then has to wish himself out of the situation that he got himself into!

Another subplot is that only people who either have or have had a fairy godparent can know about another child’s fairy godparent. If someone finds out the child will lose their fairy godparent.  In addition to this, they will have no recollection of ever having had a fairy godparent.

One of Timmy’s protagonists in the show is a teacher named Crocker. When Crocker was a boy Cosmo and Wanda were his fairly odd parents, but someone found out and he lost them.  Because he once had fairy Godparents he can know about Timmy’s fairy Godparents without Timmy losing them, however, Crocker is obsessed with exposing Timmy’s secret.

In season six we see the introduction of a baby for Cosmos and Wanda. Because of their never ending desire to be parents Timmy goes ahead and wishes one up for them!  This opens up a lot of new plot ideas for the show.

What Parents May Want to Know

This cartoon, in some ways, is a lot like the cartoons of the 50s and 60s. There’s a lot of physical comedy and characters are constantly getting injured, however, they instantly recover. Violence is used as a tool to get laughs not to cause any real harm. Characters get clobbered squashed blown up and so forth, in the end though nobody gets hurt.

In some cases Timmy does learn something from his wishes that of gone awry but the main focus of the show is to entertain.

Vicki, who plays Timmy’s babysitter, certainly is not a role model for smaller children, especially in the earlier episodes.  If they watch they may need some assurance that the show is only for fun and a real babysitter shouldn’t act this way. The show seems to be geared towards elementary school but should be entertaining for most ages.

Fairly Odd Parents is very fast-paced and can contain some mature humor.

The show is very creative and is created by a very high quality production house, Nickelodeon, who has made many quality shows throughout the years.
